The quintessential country pub…

Last weekend we opted for a break from the bright lights of the big city and headed off to the awesome countryside of East Anglia. Actually we only made it as far as Whittlesford and checked-in to the excellent value Holiday Inn Express.

On a previous visit we stayed and dined in the rather fabulous Red Lion opposite, so by way of a change booked a table for dinner at the John Barleycorn in Duxford. As a former Duxford resident and ‘local’ I had fond though distant memories of this 17th century coaching inn; it had a lot to live-up to!

We weren’t disappointed. From the moment we walked through the door the hospitality was lovely. After a quick snifter at the bar we were shown to our table in the rear of the restaurant area, cosy, candlelit and comfortable.

The menu is an English European hybrid with more than a nod to provenance and comprising many locally sourced, fresh quality ingredients.  We opted for a shared charcuterie board with the most amazing chorizo followed by ground steak burgers all washed down with a couple of glasses of red. The John Barleycorn is located… continued
