The lost art of retailing?

Angel Islington, closed for business (nearly).

These photos were taken in one street, Chapel Market in North London, late on a Monday afternoon; at that time in the same street Marks & Spencer, Superdrug, McDonalds, Iceland and GAP together a smattering of restaurants & bars were all open and trying to attract customers.

The shuttered shops have just finished for the day, not closed down. Cause or symptom of the decline of the high street and inevitable demise of the local shop?
