Bracing walk through Broxbourne Woods

Located just 20 miles north of London, Broxbourne Woods is Hertfordshire’s only National Nature Reserve and has been declared a Special Area of Conservation.

On Saturday we loaded up the Bambi Campervan and headed north to enjoy the delights of this charming Ancient Woodland. The Autumn colours were truly amazing, the remaining leaves allowing an almost ethereal dappled sunlight to leak through what’s left of the canopy.

An abundance of trails provided the ideal stomping ground for the pooch and an ample supply of rustic wooden benches peppered throughout the trails offered a welcome pause for us humans in between bouts of hearty exercise.

We finished our first trip here at the lovely little village of Brickendon, stopping off at the rather splendid Farmer’s Boy pub for a spot of lunch.

On the plus side there’s loads of free parking, the ground is undulatingly level (ish) and we’ll definitely be back to explore the Sculpture Trail. Negatives; it was difficult to find anywhere to park the Bambi with its 2.5m height, headroom being restricted in the car parks.
