We’d heard about the St John’s Chop House when we visited their sister restaurant the Tickell Arms at Whittlesford, which is just as well as it’s slightly off the beaten track so we probably wouldn’t have found it otherwise.
The restaurant is set in a beautiful old building, the dining rooms are cosy and although it wasn’t busy when we went there was still a great atmosphere. From the moment we arrived staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient without being intrusive. They took the time to properly explain the specials with knowledge and enthusiasm.
As it was Sunday our party all decided on the roast of the day which was beef; when it arrived the food was beautifully presented, the portions more than adequate and it was cooked to perfection. After the meal we asked to have coffee in the charming little garden, again nothing was too much trouble, staff moved everything for us within moments.
Would highly recommend this place for great British food and understated but excellent service. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and overall experience.
